Exactly! I just want to be there and be done with all the planning for pre/post-Con teaching, packing, etc. Argh.

We're so exhausted from this crazy year that we can barely get excited for Con, but I'm sure we'll be all perky by the time we arrive Thursday!

It'll just make the actual fix next year even better.

Condescension is my trigger, what can I say?

Yeah, we're looking at a year without a host hotel in our near future. We got in, but only by chance. I wish they'd provide early hotel registration for people willing to buy full weekend passes for the next year as well as eternals, simply because it makes the most sense for people who are there all weekend to have the closest rooms; I sent a polite email with that suggestion and ended up in quite the nasty little confrontation with a man who attempted to lecture me about how "privileging the wealthy isn't what DragonCon means." Note I said "attempted."

I'm curious, too. We love DarkCon, but we love the players even more. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

John (Omar) and I (Irony) hold court at the Hilton bar on Thursday night before Con--we're usually situated by 9pm at the latest. We hope to see many of you there, as we miss all of you terribly.

I enjoyed, more than anything else, the metagame. The moment we walked into Malice's on Friday evening and said a few words for her wake--not one person talking about anything other than the game--I was hooked. As an English/Lit oriented person, I was immediately in love.

You guys all played the hell out of a variety of characters and historical DarkCon scenarios, and I've never seen you have so much fun. It was the most active, energetic game I've ever seen.

My favorite moment was endgame. I adored that we didn't have to do the coin flipping, which is the very mechanic that kept John and me from endgame for all these years, and that it was based on actual role-playing instead. We were in Benji's group (thank you, Jen, for leading us to that group!) and everyone got to have their last moment. My moment was exceptionally meta: Benji turned to me and said, "What did you learn from playing Irony all these years, that you've never told anyone before?" I'm pretty sure Laura turned to someone in that moment and anticipated that I would cry, which yeah, I totally did. My response? "That I am capable of loving a great number of people, who can love me in return." Then there were hugs, and Minotaur endgame badassery, and I loved every minute of it. The Minotaur was particularly awesome from a gaming standpoint, because everyone had a turn to go up against the Big Bad without having a three-hour battle. We were able to show off our characters with everyone else still involved and supporting, and I have never felt such camaraderie. In that moment, yeah, we were metagaming. And it was freaking awesome.

I hope that the future DarkCon will take this kind of endgame into account; while I understand that there will be those who "play like it's a first-person shooter," there are those of us who privilege role-playing over everything else. We want to have different means with which to end a confrontation (maybe not with players, but certainly with NPCs).

And holy crap was the new merchant--Aveer?--amazing. Smartest kid in the world. Like a young Omar.

Like you, we're not surprised by this turn of events since Dark Con takes so much from the staff and owners, and the convention has drastically changed in the last few years. In short: we'll see you this year, we completely understand taking a year off, and we're already in line for the relaunch.

My goodness, it's been an amazing run, and I suspect this year shall top them all. Thanks, HMG, for running this massive labor of love for us. We love you, and although we've not said it often enough, we appreciate you.

The thought of Omar revealed to be Phil makes me laugh and laugh. I'm sure nobody will be surprised by our character requests, but we have backups if needed. :)

15 days?  15 days?  How am I supposed to read 500 pages of Hemingway, who knows how much Dunn, refresh basic statistics, while freaking car shopping in 15 days?!  And I can't even find a copy of the actual book For Whom the Bell Curves!  Are you people trhying to kill me?

Josh, I've got you covered on Hemingway and Dunn... but probably not the Dark Conned versions.
