Rules Changes - 5h Ed
« on: August 15, 2013, 01:40:30 PM »
Y'all are taking these Rules Changes better than I am.  I ran through the thing hopping "No PRIME?  Where are Readied Items?  I can't use the bathroom In Game!"  I was assuming someone else would be incensed or shocked or something.

Actually, I like most of the rules.  This set is mostly simplifications and easing the actual game play.  Quite frankly, some of the changes just make the game rules match how we were already playing more closely.  I mean, how many people really paid attention to if they had a hand on their weapon when combat started?

Still, there's always unintended consequences.  Does anyone see anything about the rules changes which could lead to unexpected problems or issues?

I've been so freaking busy with everything i haven't had a chance to read through them.  I really should try and find time... maybe this weekend.

Would it be fair to ask for a list of the major changes?

Same here.  Been a crazy busy week.

Patch notes would be nice for those less-than-completist types.

You peoples.  I wanted to see how many changes were actually noticeable.

My short list of items I noticed are

]Prime is gone
Order Declaration is Different
Heads/Tails Attach/Defend gone
Move and Defend now defends against all attacks from that one person
Item Ready rules are gone
Only Non-Concealable and Items you use in a round are visible
Innocent Bystander Rules are gone
Action options now have the actions split into more categories instead of just Attack and Defend
Bathroom is a Neutral Zone
Surprise is gone
Startled specifically references the Wound Shock coin (it's Tails)
Pulling your Punches is gone
Costs in Free Fire are specifically free as well

I make no promise this is all inclusive

Hmmm....

While the word "Prime" is not mentioned, the mechanics for it still seem to be there.

In a 1v1 confrontation, Move and Defend is more powerful than Guarding or Contesting since it defends against ALL attacks from a single person regardless of type.

The lack of item readiness is interesting.  I was always careful to keep my "go-to" items in a separate pocket for those moments of paranoia.  At the same time, I notice a lot of people bending the readiness rules during a confrontation.  I always called people out on it, but kinda felt bad for doing so since I would sometimes purposefully wait for my target to have their hands free before I confront them.  While strategic, it mostly affects people who aren't rules buffs which is kinda cheesy.

Maybe I dreamed it, but I seem to recall that Psionic backlash (for witnessing a death) was removed in a recent rules errata.  That mechanic is actually in the rules, though.

Bunny Helpers and the Help Line phone number is now in the book.

Ricky, the Psionic Backlash being gone was a scenario specific errata for the Easter Extravaganza.  I believe we're still a few years from that game's start date.

I'm looking at the defense rules of the new edition.... I think there might be a typo in ii. Coins to flip against Missile Attacks:

It basically says to calculate coins to flip it's: Base Defense from all armor items + Additional HtH Defense from all armor items + 1/2 Dex

I'm thinking it should be: Base Defense from all armor items + Additional Missile Defense from all armor items + 1/2 Dex

Normally, I wouldn't worry about a simple typo, but this one has an effect on the actual rules.

This is what fresh eyes are for.  I guarantee you each one of them's read that fifty times, and they've each found a hundred other issues which are now fixed.  I e-mailed it to them in case they haven't printed out 5th edition yet.  If they have, they could potentially add it to the scenario FAQ or Errata.  Alas.  Read faster next time, Ricky.
